Ask our AI about the job

Not sure what you need? Just describe it.

Tell it about the roof, the house and roughly what your Enemalta bill is. It works out which jobs you are looking at and what the survey needs to check. Savings and payback come from the calculator below.

What would solar save you?

Savings and payback, whether a battery pays, and how big a system your roof needs — from PVGIS yields, the Enemalta tariff and the REWS grant terms, every one of them cited below. The only number we cannot source is what an installation costs, so you set that yourself. The 2026 grant is closed, so it starts switched off.

Total benefit per year

Enter your consumption or your bill below — your figure appears here

PVGIS: 1,668 kWh per kWp a year facing south at 32°.

Left blank, it is sized to cover your year’s use. The average Maltese home system is 3.5 kWp.

The 2026 grant closed on 12 September 2026. A further round was announced but not detailed. Without a grant you get the €0.15/kWh feed-in tariff for 20 years.

An assumption — installers quote after a survey. There is no neutral 2026 Maltese price; one installer’s undated guide works out at about €1,170–1,670 per kWp before grant. Put in the figure you have been quoted.

The rest is exported at the feed-in tariff. Higher if someone is home in the day or you charge a car from it; lower if the house is empty until evening.

How this is worked out

Indicative, from sourced public data: PVGIS, Enemalta and REWS, checked 16 October 2026. The installed cost and the self-consumption share are your assumptions. A roof survey gives the real figure.

Describe the roof.
We'll work it out.

A photo of the roof, a bill, or just a sentence. It asks what it needs and tells you plainly which parts have to wait for a survey.

Tell me about the roof and the house — flat or pitched, what is up there already, and roughly what your Enemalta bill is — and whether you are after panels, a battery, an EV charger or a repair.

Attach a photo of the roof and it will say what the survey needs to look at. Files are passed straight to the assistant and never stored. Solar jobs have no published Maltese rate, so nothing here is priced by the assistant; the calculator above works out savings and payback from sourced figures.

How MaltaSolar.mt works

Solar in Malta is mostly a design question: how big, which way, with or without a battery, and whether a grant changes the sums. We answer it on your roof and against your bills, then quote it and deliver it through a verified installer. You deal with us; we deal with the installer.

Verified installers.
One contract.

Every installation we deliver is carried out by a solar installer listed on CheckYourSolar, our verified solar installer directory, part of the CheckYourTraders network. CheckYourTraders checks identity, insurance and track record, publishes reviews from real customers, and gives the installer a right of reply.

When a REWS grant scheme is open it requires REWS-registered equipment, a 10-year installer warranty and an application made before anything is bought. The 2026 scheme closed on 12 September 2026; a further round was announced but not detailed. Either way, we are the contractor who answers for the job.

Need more than solar?

MaltaSolar.mt is one of the CheckYourTraders trade sites. Plan your roof with SpecYourSolar, check whether a battery pays with StoreYourSolar — and for the other trades a property needs, the same verified network, the same sourced-figures discipline and the same contractor model.

We are actively looking for
the best solar installers in Malta.

MaltaSolar.mt delivers installations as the contractor, and every installer on one comes from the CheckYourTraders-verified network. We want the ones who design for the roof in front of them, who explain a battery honestly, and who put their work in front of a customer without flinching — in Malta and Gozo.

Tell us what you do and where you work. When a job comes up that fits, we will put you in front of it.

We read every one. Verification through CheckYourTraders comes first; nobody goes on a job of ours without it.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a solar grant in Malta right now?
No. The 2026 REWS renewable energy scheme closed to applications on 12 September 2026 (its battery options closed on 13 July) after more than 3,350 applications. The government announced a further round later in the year, but has not published its scope, rates or dates. While it was open it paid 65% of the eligible cost of PV and a hybrid inverter, capped at €3,000 and €645 per kWp, and 75% of a battery, capped at €6,000 and €600 per kWh.
What feed-in tariff will I get?
Without a grant, a system under 40 kWp earns €0.15 per kWh exported for 20 years (the 2026 allocation is 8 MWp). With a grant the rate was €0.105 per kWh for 20 years in 2025; the 2026 grant-assisted rate has not been confirmed. The grant and the grant-free tariff are mutually exclusive: you choose one.
Do I need planning permission for solar panels?
Usually not. Under the REWS Manual of Procedures (November 2025), rooftop PV is permitted development under Class 1(iv) of S.L. 552.08 and needs no notification if it complies with DC15 (guidance G26) and does not exceed the roof height limit. On a scheduled building, or a building over 75 years old in a conservation area, the panels must stay within the building envelope and must not rise above the parapet.
How much electricity does solar produce in Malta?
The European Commission's PVGIS model gives about 1,668 kWh per kWp per year for a south-facing panel at the optimal 32° tilt, and 1,677 in Gozo. The average Maltese domestic system is 3.5 kWp, which on a south-facing roof works out at roughly 5,800 kWh a year.
East/west or south-facing panels?
South gives the most per panel: about 1,667 kWh per kWp a year at 30° under PVGIS. Facing east the figure is 1,376 (about 17% less), facing west 1,393 (about 16% less), and laid flat 1,476 (about 11% less). On a flat Maltese roof the frame decides the direction, so the survey usually comes down to shading and space rather than which way the house faces.
Are batteries worth it in Malta?
It depends on how much electricity you use. Without a grant, exported solar earns €0.15 per kWh, more than the first two Enemalta bands cost (€0.1047 up to 2,000 kWh a year and €0.1298 up to 6,000). A stored kilowatt-hour only saves more than an exported one earns once your consumption is above 6,000 kWh (€0.1607) and especially above 10,000 (€0.3420). No Maltese battery price is published, so the calculator asks for the one you have been quoted. Our StoreYourSolar page sets the sums out band by band.
How long does solar take to pay back?
We do not quote a typical payback, because there is no neutral current price for a Maltese installation: published guides range from about €1,170 to €1,670 per kWp (undated) down to €800 to €1,000 per kWp (2023). The calculator lets you enter the cost you have been quoted, or keep its labelled assumption, and works out the payback from your consumption, your roof and the tariff.
How is my bill saving worked out?
Enemalta's residential tariff is banded over the year, including 5% VAT: €0.1047 per kWh up to 2,000 kWh, €0.1298 to 6,000, €0.1607 to 10,000, €0.3420 to 20,000 and €0.6076 above, plus a service charge of €65 a year single-phase or €195 triple-phase. Solar you use yourself comes off the top of your consumption, so it saves you your highest band first. Eco-reductions for small households are not modelled.
What happens when the grant reopens?
Under the 2026 rules the application (Part A) had to go in before anything was bought; an offer letter followed, valid for eight months; the system was installed; then Part B was filed with the fiscal receipt. Applicants had to be Malta residents aged 18 or over who own the property or hold it on a long lease, with a residential-tariff bill, and no landlords or businesses. The next round may change any of this, and we will update this page when it is published.
Can I design my own system before a survey?
Yes. SpecYourSolar, our free roof planner, loads a satellite view of your roof from your address, lets you place panels where they will actually go, shows what the layout should generate, and lets you request a quote from the design. It cannot see the roof's structure, the shading from tanks or the planning position, so the free roof survey still checks those before anything is ordered.
Is the calculator a quote?
No. It uses PVGIS yields, the Enemalta tariff and the REWS terms, all cited under it, but the installed cost is your assumption and your roof is not yet surveyed. A free roof survey turns it into a fixed, itemised quote.
Who installs the system?
A solar installer from the CheckYourTraders-verified network, listed on CheckYourSolar, our verified installer directory. CheckYourTraders checks identity, insurance and track record and publishes reviews from real customers. We stay the contractor who answers for the job.
Do you cover Gozo?
Yes, through installers local to Gozo from the same verified network. PVGIS gives Gozo slightly more sun than Malta: about 1,677 kWh per kWp a year at the optimal tilt.
How do I get started?
Book a free roof survey. We look at the roof and your bills, design a system, send an itemised quote, and if you go ahead the installation is delivered by a verified installer with one point of contact throughout.
